How diabetes affects your eyes

The eye contains a sensitive layer called the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, which plays a vital role in vision. The blood vessels in the retina can be affected by diabetes, leading to a condition known as diabetic retinopathy. It can develop in anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
